Box supper

During my early years of schooling our father a share crop farmer, moved  us around a bit, when I was in the sixth grade we had moved to Rough Creek.

Rough Creek School it seems always had a box supper during the fall of the year, don't know if you know what a box supper is or not, but I'll explain that in a moment for those of you who may not know, first a little back ground on Rough Creek.

The community history of Rough Creek dates back to 1835 when its first Church.... The Rough Creek United Baptist Church was founded.

And the community kind of... took off from there, Rough Creek School is no longer being used for school purpose.

But the founding school building is located on Hwy East 80 out of London Kentucky and today is surrounded by a vibrant and homely little community.

Box suppers have lost their zeal in todays schools, but back then, they were a live and well.

In todays society they would be called a fund raising event, but for us it wasn't about the funds  it was more about fun time and a night out for the family.

This is how the box supper operated, each girl in school could prepare a food basket or box they used to put  food in.

They were required to put their name on the out side of  the box's for School purpose, and it was also handy for the boy's to see who's name was on the box so they might have the inside track when bidding started.

At a specified time everyone gathered around and the bidding began  for the box's.

The girls  were always anxious by now to see who would be bidding on their box's  and whom they would be sharing it with. As it was custom for them to eat with the highest bidder.

Sometimes the bidding got intense  when two boys liked the same girl.

The school kept the money for the boxes, we kept the fun and memories for ourselves.

Now that you know what a box supper is, maybe your school would like to have one some time, could be fun! it was for us.

Until next time,  God Bless.
